          The Convention on the Rights of the Child. Thirty-three years ago on Nov. 20, 1989, & quote ; the UN Convention on the Rights of the Child (CRC) was ratified. UN leaders decided that & quote; children needed a special convention just for them because people under 18 years old often need special care and protection that adults do not need. They & quote; wanted to make sure that the world recognized that children have human rights too.& quote ; Various entities drafted the CRC together — & quote ; governments, nongovernmental organizations, human rights advocates, lawyers, health specialists, social workers, educators, child development experts and religious leaders from all over the world quote; This consensus document took 10 long years to craft. It takes into account the & quote; importance of tradition and cultural values for the protection and harmonious development of the child. It reflects the principal legal systems of the world and acknowledges the specific needs of developing countries.

          This ratified CRC became the & quote; first legally binding international instrument to incorporate the full range of human rights — civil, cultural, economic, political and social  rights, binding countries in & quote; a common ethical and legal framework to protect children's rights.

          REPUBLIC Act 10661 signed in 2015 by the late Philippine President Benigno Aquino 3rd made November the official National Children's Month in the Philippines, its origins being the UN World Children's Month. This 2015 Act encourages us Filipinos to know and understand the Convention on the Rights of the Child (CRC) as well as to sustain the promotion and protection of the child's rights especially in this time of the coronavirus pandemic. The Philippines signed the UN CRC on Jan. 26, 1990, making it the 109th country to sign the Convention. The Philippine Senate ratified it on Aug. 21, 1990.
